Ireland has no state register of sworn translators. If you've dealt with certified translation in another EU country, that surprises people — there's no exam to sit, no official stamp issued by a ministry, no list to check a translator's name against. What certification means here instead is a signed Certificate of Accuracy: a written declaration from the translator, attached to the translation, stating that it is a complete and accurate rendering of the original document, along with their name, signature, the date, and their contact details.

That certificate is what a clerk, an admissions officer, or a caseworker is actually looking for when a checklist says "certified translation required." It's the document doing the work, not a badge.

In practice, this is what's typically accepted:

• INIS / ISD (immigration and residency applications) — for translations of birth, marriage, and civil-status documents submitted with an application.
• The Courts Service — for documents filed or produced in court proceedings.
• Universities — for academic transcripts and qualification certificates submitted with admissions applications.
• Embassies and consulates — for documents required as part of visa or citizenship processes, Irish or foreign.
